Horticulture Internship

Description:

Welcome to the Horticulture Internship at Holmsted Manor, England!   The Manor is a Victorian home located on 19 acres in West Sussex near Haywards Heath.  The grounds include lawns, gardens, stonework and ponds.  The internship offers practical experience restoring and maintaining the grounds.   The program is open to any adult over 18 who is interested in pursuing a career in horticulture or has serious interest in gardening.   The applicant must be capable of physical labor and willing to be outdoors in all types of weather.    

Goals:

  • Interns have an opportunity to develop practical horticultural skills.  Tasks can include weeding, mulching, watering, fertilizing, planting/transplanting (choosing right plant for right place), plant identification, deadheading, composting, pruning, container planting, maintaining the ponds, planting and maintaining a rock garden,  installation and maintenance of structural features (pathways and benches) , and using a greenhouse.
  • 40 hours each week in the garden.  Typical weekly schedule:  8:00-5:00.  Lunch from 1:00-2:00.   Monday worship & Wednesday intercession for 1 hour, Tues & Thurs staff meeting for 15 min. are mandatory for U of N students, optional for others.
  • Experience teamwork, cooperation, and responsibility
  • Accredited with University of the Nations
  • There will be opportunities to visit nearby National Trust Gardens
  • Sessions available from March through October 2012
  • Option for 10-12 week internship to satisfy college coursework requirement
  • Option of 4 week  sessions to provide CEU or seminar credits
  • Session start dates are flexible per intern’s schedule.

Experience: Master Gardener training: Washington State University. Horticulture training: Edmonds Community College. Over 20 years working in my own and clients’ gardens. Summer 2011 managed Holmsted Manor grounds and supervised horticulture intern & garden workers.
